Prayer Painting

This piece was inspired by the walls of an old cathedral which for me represents safety and hope, but the brick wall is also a representation of the walls of our own mind. In that way, the wall represents our own prison. The aged appearance, the stains and cracks are symbolic of our past and how our life choices are all permanent, all stay with us and shape and change our view forever. The candle on the ledge is a representation of our choices, or one particular choice, and our lives in general, balancing on a ledge, at the mercy of chance. It symbolizes how fragile our lives are, that a gust of wind could take it all away, and the permanence of our choices, how the future flows freely but once a choice has been made it is written into existence, solidified, made fact. The glow in the background represents god, or hope, or the future; it stands for something timeless. The subject is looking out the window, through the trees that have been shaped and worn by nature and by time, and hoping beyond a written life for something more, something new…
