About The Artwork

Principio o Final? Inspired by the cliffs of the California coastline at Aptos, Principio seeks a timeless portrait of nature that could very well the beginning or the very end of times. "My initial thought with this piece was to do a seascape of the cliffs at Aptos as it looks today with trees on the cliffs and sailboats in the water. At the same time I was reading the book of Genesis and was fascinated by its mythological description of the primordial earth being only sky and sea. I decided to keep the painting at its most basic with the mysterious mustard sky echoing the simultaneous feeling of creation and destruction present in nature. The thick impasto on cliffs speak of the tectonics breaks that occurred millions of years ago." A note about the framing: My white frame paintings were framed by Prints Etc. in the North Beach neighborhood of San Francisco. The white frame design is a custom design by my father Gustavo Colina. His intention was to merge the classical elegance of a frame with the modern aesthetic of clean white to contrast with the bold colors in the paintings.

Felipe Colina was born in 1991 in Maracaibo, Venezuela. Currently residing in the San Francisco Bay Area. After graduating from Williams College in 2012, Felipe worked in the tech industry in the Bay Area for two years before deciding to pursue a path in the arts. Living in the Sunset district, Felipe taught himself how to draw and paint guided chiefly by the Letters of Van Gogh. He embraced his own path of artistic learning modeled after traditional art training: focus on the masters and learn from nature. During his time in San Francisco, he would routinely draw at Golden Gate Park and Ocean Beach. His pieces combine elegance and rawness, featuring balanced compositions and bold expressive brushstrokes.
