About The Artwork

A limited edition is also listed here at Saatchi and measures 11.4 H x 18.7 W. Here the info of my gallery about the painting: Thematic Classification of the Work In his painting "Prometheus (Individual)" Andreas Garbe combines philosophical considerations with aspects of human history. What, he asks through this work, would be the individual, personified by the mastermind, leader or even constructor without the "anonymous mass", which is also composed of many individuals and which ultimately allows their ideas and visions to take shape, manifesting them so to speak? And what would these helpers, nameless in the historical context, be without their spiritual "leader"? For the visualization of this question, the artist uses the legend of Prometheus, the titan, who brought fire to mankind according to Greek mythology and thus stands as an allegory for this fundamental question. For what would he be without men, to whom could he have brought the fire that symbolizes the progress of mankind? What would people be without him, how could they have built empires and societies without this impulse? Modern acrylic painting, as the artist defines it for his work, should not only be committed to aesthetic aspects, his paintings are therefore not simply decorative. They must ask the viewer questions, tell stories and invite him to discover - but also challenge him, because despite his sense of aesthetics, Garbe's work is not always immediately accessible. Image structure and content intention Modern acrylic painting distinguishes between figurative/objective and abstract subjects without reference to reality. This differentiation is blurred in many of Garbe's works, portraits merge with the background, architecture is painted over and poured over, so that the reference to the figurative is often not obvious at first glance. The work "Prometheus (Individual)" is no exception and also only gradually opens up to the recipient, who possibly notices the head of the allegorical mastermind after the second or third look, just as his helpers, who are depicted in stylized form, seemingly integrate themselves smoothly into the composition held in red. Each of these protagonists faces the Pyramid and the Tower of Palenque, both of which are symbols of what man can achieve when the individual and the group cooperate as a constructive community. Modern Acrylic Painting: Technique & Materials In contrast to its beginnings, modern acrylic painting in contemporary art is extremely diverse in terms of its techniques and possibilities of expression. Andreas Garbe uses these possibilities and gives his paintings with a self-confident application of paint a haptic structure that can often have an effect even at great distances. The painting was built up in several layers, mainly by means of a spatula technique. In addition, pouring technique and painting were used for some details. A high-quality cotton cloth was used to support the picture, which the artist stretched on a massive stretcher frame. The colours used come from the manufacturer Talens and have the highest light fastness and pure pigmentation. Therefore, this modern acrylic painting unfolds its effect not only through its quite impressive size, but also through the strong and very long-lasting colors.

In his works, the artist deals in particular with the impressions of his travels, which lead him together with his wife around the whole world. Focal points are among others landscape abstractions, lost cultures as well as the confrontation with the consequences of human action. The paint serves as a means of expression, which enables him to visualize the processed themes both in one and three dimensions. "The predominantly abstract works of the Dresden artist Andreas Garbe impress the viewer with their sure colour aesthetics, stylistic independence and, last but not least, their craftsmanship.Whether captivating liveliness, almost magical calm or refreshing lightness - Andreas Garbe masters the expressiveness of the colours, lets them shine powerfully from their deepest interior and has thus found the answer to a question that the painter has always had to face. But Andres Garbe is also one of those who are in search, in search of the possibilities of the artistic realization of the experienced and learned. His themes range from history to the present: under the impression of his travels, he brings the mythologies of different cultures to life, tells in his works of impressive experiences of nature or, last but not least, reflects on the eternal and interpersonal. A demanding approach that challenges the intellectual as well as the sensitive viewer and which Andreas Garbe himself faces with great seriousness" Petra Klein, September 2009 In order to allow his artistic expression more scope for freedom and to be able to experiment in a more varied way, Garbe signs certain works with Julio Fernandez or Raphael König.
