About The Artwork

The title is a play on the name of the blue pigment used in the painting: Prussian blue, and the violence that ensues. The name Prussia derives from the Old Prussians; in the 13th century, the Teutonic Knights – an organized Catholic medieval military order of German crusaders – conquered the lands inhabited by them. The terms "Prussian" and "Prussianism" have often been used, especially outside Germany, to denote the militarism, military professionalism, aggressiveness, and conservatism of the Junker class of landed aristocrats in the East who dominated first Prussia and then the German Empire. On the other hand, Prussian Blue, pigment code PB27, is a very beautiful shade of blue with greenish undertones. The painting's first layers a sad wash of Prussian Blue, flowing down in long "tears", with a layer of flesh tones that stand for the dead bodies in Prussian wars. The top layers of light blue makes it all into a history.
