About The Artwork

This painting is a part of my Queer Fruit series. For some of these paintings I used queer-identified volunteers as models. I would create a safe space for them to undress and play with the plethora of fruits I provided and I would capture their gestures, stances, and postures with my camera. Although I would use those photos to inform the anatomy of my drawings, I always chose to alter the faces so as to veer away from portraiture. The idea was to recognize identity as dynamic and fluid instead of fixed. The modeling sessions and subsequent interviews I held with my models became an intimate part of the project and I knew that to fully immerse myself in the work, I had to turn the camera over to one of my subjects let myself be witnessed in my own skivvies and vulnerabilities. This painting is the result. I'm holding a bushukan fruit from Japan, also known as Buddha's Hand. My Queer Fruits search for the grey area between commonly accepted binaries such as masculine/feminine, dominant/submissive, gay/straight, pure/dirty, normal/aberrant. The texture is varied with a mix of drawing and painting mediums. It is a stretched canvas with sturdy 1.75" thick stretcher bars and includes 2 heavy duty D-rings and a hanging wire on the back. No frame necessary; it can easily hang directly on your wall.
