About The Artwork

This is a diptych. Two separate paintings but they go along together. ¿Quién eres? and Who are you?. Two languages apart. This is my granddaughter on the left. On the right it's me, I am in the spirit of a rodent, like in costume and looking like a Mixe woman, from the original people close to where I live in Oaxaca. My granddaughter who is from Jamaican descent is wearing some fancy tech suit, some kind of pink. She lives in Toronto, and it is snowing. We meet in the web, we are getting to know each other. We share the same planet. We reach out, we almost touch. This about migrations, different climates and playing to dress up like people do in festivals and carnivals, a Spanish tradition that is very alive here in Mexico.

I am interested in experimenting with sincretic images that capture the whole range of religious experiences. I am inspired by the architecture and mural paintings of the Aztecs, Mayan, Zapotecan and other peoples from America and I like to intersect them with the aesthetics brought to America by the Spanish, like virgins, saints and holy beings. I intersect them with a third paradigm which is my personal journey into Indian philosophies and the idea of enlightenment. The result shows where I am now, believing that art is the way, and being an artist is my religion.
