ABOUT THE ARTWORK

The sheer excitement when dark clouds build on the horison, promising rain after a sweltering day. When those first fat drops hit the ground and releases that enthralling wet earth smell. And then it starts pouring – a rhythmic pounding on the roof and gutters, creating a wonderworld of streams and puddles that quenches the thirsty ground and washes away the dullness. Windows are decorated with watery lines that trickle down in mesmerising patterns and plants funnel the precious liquid down to their roots. The leaves on the trees dance in the downpour, glistening with joy brought on by this blessing from above. The drenched earth bows in deep appreciation as the final thunder moves on into the distance.

My name is Marié Morrison, I'm a self-taught artist from Pretoria, South Africa. By day I am a graphic designer and own a small graphic design studio with my husband. But by heart I am an artist - always. I paint and do block printing in my spare time. I fell in love with art at a very young age, and it's always been a big part of my life. Being a graphic designer, I am naturally inclined to take any subject matter and break it down into a more stylized/simplified/abstract state. This strongly influences and rolls over to my art style. I consider my pieces as mind maps - snippets and fragments of memories, experiences and emotions. Captured in colour, pattern and rhythm. My paintings and block prints are hugely inspired by Africa – its richness, soul, vibe and warmth. The African wild has a deep rhythm that never lets go of your soul once you've experienced it - I hope to capture some of that (or even just a glimpse of it) in my work.
