About The Artwork

This painting is based on my childhood memories from when I was seven years old. I lived in the industrial town of Manchester in the North West of England and was slightly anemic and small (I'm still small!). My parents decided to send me to The Fresh Air Home, a charitable boarding school that was out in the countryside about 40 miles south of Manchester. The home backed on to Delamere Forest in Cheshire. I was there for almost a year and I spent countless days exploring and playing in the woods. I have always believed this episode in my life was crucial in nurturing my passion for light, nature and landscape, a subject I have returned to time and again in some form or another during my long and winding career. In this work I applied a process of painting in layers - acrylic, then oils, and finally oil pastels which creates an intense vibrancy.
