About The Artwork

An ancient farmhouse was built over a spring source in the Cevennes mountains in France. The source provided all the water needed to grow abundant crops and the farmer fed his family well. The neighbours became jelous and tried to scare the family from the land - scratching at the door of the house at night and crying the devil needed paying. That is how the story goes in the Cevennes, handed down, mythologised the house was eventually named La Mas Du Diable. This painting is an evocation of the water below the house, the terraced fields below it and the barns and stores for food. Part of the Transient Landscapes group of paintings completed 2010-2012.
