“Reflection” Exhibits: “Slow Down | Speed Up” group show, Atrium Gallery, Ventura, CA, 24 May -9 July 2019 — awarded Honorable Mention. “Reflection” is 24”x36” and I guess the newest piece; the first piece of 2019. It is also technically the longest to complete as well. This canvas was originally painted in 2015 and was a massive explosion of color. The base was black and the original concept was to just use various shades of blue but through the course of applying paint, it quickly gravitated toward other colors being applied until the painting was an explosion of color. I had it hanging in my house and was never really satisfied with it but would stare at it thinking what more could be done to it and finding myself inspired to create other works/series so it served as a muse in some ways. Then the need to create again came over me and I took this canvas off the wall and decided to use a simple palette of black, white, and grey to mute the colors then scraped the layers off to try to allow the colors to peek through. Finally, using black paint that had been watered down, the final figurative elements were added. All that remains of the original piece are the hints of color and the black edges of the canvas. Built a custom frame, D-rings attached to frame to allow for easy hanging. Back of the artwork is exposed to show signature and list of shows painting has appeared in.

When it comes to my art, I can’t tell you how to look at it. All I can tell you is that each painting is an extension of myself as they are autobiographical in nature. I am not trying to make any particular statement with my work -- I am just existing in the here and now. I believe that something inside of you is always telling a story and art is the way to service the subconscious; to make something physically come into being that is inspired by emotions or needs. I don’t know what painting teaches me. I just know that it frees me – free from the future, free from the past, free from regret, and free from worry. I have always enjoyed all things behind-the-scenes in any artistic genre be it film, sculpture, theatre, painting. The journey one takes as they explore the creative process has always fascinated me; starting out with an idea and through the trials and errors along with the unexpected twists and turns that occur to ultimately arrive at what becomes the final product. I have discovered that through this process, my painting starts to take on a life of its own and tells me what it wants to be. That is where the titles, if the painting has one, come from – that symbiotic relationship between the art and artist and ultimately the viewer and the journey to get here.
