ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Regalitos de Abuelita, is an oil on canvas painting that explores the connection between identity and culture. As a daughter of the diaspora and isthmus, I am reflecting on what being Central American means to me. The minimalistic yellow background allows the focus on the tension created between the embroidered mangos in the upper lefthand corner and the figure. The decision to paint myself nude is a matter of me controlling the narrative and viewing the figure objectively. The only thing that I am wearing is a gold turtle bracelet, gifted to me by my grandmother. The painting is an homage to women’s resilience and to all the women in our lives that have gifted us with endless knowledge.
