In Platonic philosophy, the act that makes knowledge possible, as a memory of what in the soul, immortal and eternal and therefore able to embrace all things, has already been present. St. Thomas, on the trail of Aristotle, however, would have distinct recollection and reminiscence, being the latter "almost a syllogism, looking for the memory in the past". The problem of reminiscence has returned to Heidegger, which seems to attribute the characteristics of reminiscence to thought; For his part, Bloch sees the limits of the metaphysical tradition in these same characters.
