About The Artwork

Heavy topic. The idea matured for a long time, accumulating emotions and meanings... We have a lot of abandoned churches in Russia. Somewhere people left, and the church was left alone in an abandoned village. Somewhere this is an unhealed wound of our past, when thousands of temples were defiled, they housed clubs, warehouses, granaries. Some churches were never rebuilt after the war. And now they stand across the country, these silent colossi, majestic and dreary. The wind rushes through their empty halls. Fragments of faded frescoes are still visible on the walls, on the vaulted ceilings. Somewhere a hand peeps through, somewhere a fold of a garment, somewhere a part of the face of a saint. And the birds are circling over the headless bell tower. This image of the destroyed temple deeply sat down in me, did not give rest. And just recently, when I was working on a completely different topic, it reappeared. I was looking for a universal image of the war that has come to us again. An image of total destruction. When your house is destroyed, there is a gaping black hole in the place of your entrance. And here in the alley there used to be a century-old oak, under which you kissed for the first time. Only the skeleton remained of it, all the branches were shot down by artillery fire ... So there was this image of the shooter, who froze in anticipation of the target. Or not, he already sees her, the eye moving slowly along with the person clamped in the crosshair of the sight. The finger strokes the steel of the trigger. Only he's already dead, this fighter. His passions, his loves, his dreams, his memories are scattered in fragments on the hillside...

Alexey Chernigin Born in 1975 in Nizhny Novgorod in the family of famous Russian artist Alexander Chernigin. From 1990 to 1994 studied painting and graphic design at Nizhny Novgorod School of Arts. Educated at Nizhny Novgorod State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering. Since 1998 the member of Russia Artists' Union. Since 2001 the faculty member of "Institute of Humanities and Arts" which is the part of "Nizhny Novgorod State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering"" at "interior design" department. Engaged in painting, drawing, interior design, photography. Works are in private and galleries' collections of Russia and abroad. "The female figure for the painter is the space, the infinite variety of variations and nuances both in plastic, proportions and in the search for new readings of the same model. This is not just a frozen form, but a bundle of energy, emotions and feelings. It pulsates life, it moves and breathes. The very structure of the skin interacts miraculously with light, giving the surface of body a special color depth. Like Gumilev: “And under her satin the blood poisoning skin runs..." My paintings are often attributed to the genre of erotica, for me this erotic subtext is of course interesting, but not primary in the painting. For me it is more interesting when it appears in the course of work, and I do not is the original, or, even worse, the only task. Each new work is is a new story. It happens that the work is written in one day, it happens that it is born for years. I love it when the work is immediate, but it is rare, it is often simply not feasible technically. But we consider only the process of painting, but there is also a “submarine” part- this is a development of the concept, finding the composition sketches, essays. The picture is not born suddenly, it is always the formation of life, the idea appears as a slight breeze, as the twenty-fifth frame, flashed and stuck somewhere deep down. Until some time it does not have an effect until the random association does not impose on it, causing a completely new interpretation. Then it begins to spin like a wheel, acquiring all new images and gradually developing into the inner picture, which is already bursting through, it is haunted. And the fun begins .. When the work is finished, it seems that all is said, but over time you begin to feel that it again inside you is spinning, catching images, accelerating the flywheel.
