ABOUT THE ARTWORK
I live by a landscaped graveyard called Mount Auburn Cemetery. At the start of the pandemic, the cemetery closed to visitors, and it reopened in June just as the rhododendrons were blooming. I painted them, along with a monument, in plein air, feeling a mixture of joy at their beauty and grief at the pandemic. I was captivated by the contrast between light and shadow.
