About The Artwork

Having studied the marine environment for my Bachelors Degree I was compelled to capture the beauty and also the science, in other words the layers of light and the movement which are critical to life. This is again a view from deep below the ocean's surface, looking up in a non-threatening way to share the space with the fish feeding from the coral reefs. This painting has a high quality bespoke wooden frame in a complimenting fishy silver, and is ready to hang. This work is one of my most sought-after pieces and has almost sold several times.

Tenby born artist Rhian Field lives and works in Pembrokeshire, Wales, UK.  She is science-trained and paints with a purpose, to close the gap between humankind and its environment. In her Deepwater Collection Rhian's uses mainly oil paint and captures the light and movement which is essential for life in our Oceans. Subjects include Grey Seals, diving birds such as Guillemots, Razorbills and Gannets, as well as Jellyfish, Octopus and Kelp. Rhian believes Art has a role to play beyond decoration and aesthetic enjoyment. Art is a powerful tool, and that maybe artists and scientists alike have a civic duty. She also believes that art has no value without the viewer as consuming art requires the creative brain. Rhian has exhibited her paintings in public spaces across Wales and in Scotland, collaborating with organisations such as the the National Assembly for Wales, Pembrokeshire Coast National Park and the RSPB.  Most of her work is inspired by her degree in Coastal & Marine Environment Studies and played an important role in her recent PhD field research, which explored the potential for artistic visuals to engage the public in climate change.
