About The Artwork

A five panel painting (pentatych) of the longest free-flowing River in the Eastern USA- the River Delaware. Each panel explores different views along the river as I see it using the colors and textures of a bright but windy day in the early Fall. Painted in traditional oil paints on canvas. The pieces hang as a single installation of 5 pieces intended to have a 1.5-2" gap between each piece. The panels all measure 30" in height and from left to right on the main image here the widths are: 20", 10", 30", 24" and 20". Each panel is painted on the same high quality hand-splined canvas with minimal staples and no bulky corner folds. A rubber gasket holds the fabric neatly in place. These canvases hang tight to the wall. The work is unframed that is gallery wrapped and the 1.5" edges of each canvas are all painted in a dark grey. Each piece is wired ready to hang.

The Question What have you done with what was given you, what have you done with the blue, beautiful world? Theo Dorgan (2015) - excerpt Artistic expression about nature can be far more than an escape from human-centred reality. It can make a pressing commentary on the state of our planet, the politics and policies that shape public debate about our environment, and the questions we need to confront. My intention is to contribute to this rise in interest and to spark new conversations, by bringing the landscape to life through my work. After a career in science and science publishing, and as a biologist I bring a distinctly different perspective to ‘nature’ for inspiration. I work in a broad variety of 2D and 3D media chosen to express the particular character of the environments I choose. I often incorporate materials from the landscape in pursuing my intention to integrate ‘landscape’ with ‘environment’. Blog: https://marywalthamdotcom.wordpress.com/
