I wanted to paint something far away from the subject matter that my local galleries seem to want as I was losing the pleasure in painting. Mapplethorpe seemed a good place to start. He is reported as saying that his self portraits express the part of him that is most self-confident, even in the 3rd of these where he is facing up to his early death from AIDs.

Recently I found my own style with my series of Scottish landscapes, but I continue to experiment with my Lockdown-inspired images and have lately produced my series of Painted Ladies.
