ABOUT THE ARTWORK
My work is inspired by French Impressionism. I would like my viewers to feel the the emotions that I felt when I painted the flowers, i.e. their beauty, wildness, and the playful splashes of bright color that they provide to the granite rock that they grow out of. I chose oil paint because it has a rich deep color far beyond that of other mediums. I am painting in a style I call splash-impressionism. This style depends on a free and rapid application of the paint in order to capture the spontaneous beauty of the moment.

I work in Yosemite National Park as a tour guide. I have worked in Yosemite for over 30 years. My artwork is inextricably tied to my Yosemite Geography and my ecological message. I am a plein air painter, print maker, and photographer. I also write and illustrate my own books. I am the author of "A Brief Instruction in Christian Religion," (A translation of Faustus Socinus), "The Chronicles of the Field Mouse Timothy," (Corn,Tomato,Wheat, Cotton, Sweet Potatoes, Rice Paddy, Pond Mouse and Yosemite), "Nature Vision" (Poems), and I have illustrated the short stories of my late daughter Sandra Fontana "Cereal at Midnight." I love nature and the wilderness. I am a proponent of the global national parks movement.
