"Rothschild" is a pastel painting celebrating the endangered breed of Giraffe - Rothschild. The painting was completing using Unison Colour Soft Pastels and Polychromo hard pastels for finer details on Clairefontaine Pastelmat Paper (measuring 50x70cm). The painting has also been mounted using an ivory (cream) border and acid free backing board to fully protect the artwork so that it is ready to frame (Total size including mount is 80x60cm). Giraffes are such graceful creatures and I was inspired to paint this piece after seeing the endangered breed in the flesh. Soft pastels are an ideal medium for my style of work as they allow for both great control and looseness at the same time. I enjoy the directness of this medium which also gives a sense of immediacy when I work with them. Although the painting has been sprayed with a fixative, smudging can still occur and the artwork must be handled with care and framed behind glass. Felicity Talman was awarded Best Young Artist with "Rothschild" in the Animal/Wildlife Category of the SAA Artists of the Year 2020 competition.
