This work started with finding the wooden support. It was part of a batch of abandoned timber in an alleyway in Penzance. I made cuts to bring the planks down to manageable sizes, then sanded the front and back. At this stage I decide which side will take paint better. I remember choosing the more grainy less smooth side and this had a big influence on the way paint was eventually applied. I adopted a minimal approach to the chimps face and an already slightly downcast expression was further eventuated by a downward blurring of the paint. The source material was from a wildlife magazine. This work is a projection of how I feel about the continued extinction of species and loss of habitat to unnecessary greed. It of course is certainly true that I cannot presume to know how the animal feels. The red background box frame foregrounds the thickness of the support and I have purposely let the red colour bleed out to the sides of the frame. This to further the idea that art goes beyond it's physical framed boundaries into both conceptual and geographical space. We are all affected by climate change and habitat loss.
