About The Artwork

Sailing through Glass is a surreal painting by Aalia Rahman that explores the concept of hard work. Painted seamlessly onto hand-stretched 100% cotton canvas, Sailing through Glass cruises you to a new, unexpected world with it’s vibrant yet pleasant colors and forms. In this painting, I painted the sail boat as a metaphor of my dad and all the struggle he went through. The clouds that are about to pour down show the tough situation he is in, while the fact that a wooden sail boat can crush glass shows that he can get through them regardless of how impossible it may seem. I understand this is not what you as the viewer may see, but I am absolutely open to the viewers interpretation and you may make it as you see. This painting took me about a year to completely finalize and finish. The artwork does not extend to the sides of canvas.

I’m an artist on a mission to capture moments in people’s life that have been life changing. And it could vary. It could either be a small incident where maybe you were lonely or you felt out of place or maybe it’s something much larger and more significant like you went through a miscarriage or you lost someone in your life or you found out you had cancer. Either way, I help people capture these moments that may not be the most pleasant at the time, but in hindsight was a learning lesson or one that helped you grow or shows how far you have come or that just made you appreciate life that much more. I like creating surreal pieces that remind you of these moments. So when anyone visits your place or office or sees the piece, they may interpret it another way or see something of themselves in it. And that’s ok. Because it’s almost like you have a secret out in the open that unless you explain what it’s about, they are not going to know. There may be people you don’t want to explain it to, and that’s fine. It can mean something else to them. But to you, this was a life changing event.
