About The Artwork

"For years my studio in Santa Barbara overlooked the Santa Ynez Mountains. From daybreak until moonrise the feeling and the colors in the landscape transformed my views, which included orchards of avocado, guava, cherimoya + plumeria. The scents , colors + sensual forms of this exotic flora recalled my childhood in Cuba." Significant details include a stripe of Rey's collection of antique brass + copper rivets, an allusion to his years as a young metal sculptor after he emigrated to the U.S. Rey’s work is a balance of abstract imagery and direct representation of textures from Cuba and his travels throughout the world. Utilizing a chisel, a traditional wood-working tool, Rey incises his drawing into the surface of his painting, providing an outline for the painting process. These lines later gain further significance, either inferring the long slats used in boat-building, or creating the textured lines that remain visible in the finished work. Ready to hang | Finished with a UV protective varnish.

Rey Alfonso is a Cuban-born artist whose mixed media paintings are energetic expressions of contemporary culture. In his art, Rey Alfonso finds resonance in motifs of water and the freedom they represent. It was in 1992, that he took to the waters in a daring escape from Cuba in a boat improvised from repurposed materials. His mixed media works are brightly hued reflections of his life's journey. Today Alfonso's pieces can be found in public and private collections in more than 40 countries. He has created works for individuals and organizations ranging from the San Francisco Opera House to the Mayo Clinic. In 2010, he was commissioned by Hilton Worldwide to create over 150 works for the private collections of the company’s owners and investors.
