About The Artwork

I fell in love with watercolour after visiting China and viewing the beautiful watercolours that Chinese watercolour artists use; I wondered how I could use traditional watercolour in my modern oil paintings. When I returned home from international exhibition in China I started to study Chinese animals and their meaning as I have an interest in symbolism. Previously I have learned about western 'dream symbolism’ during studying for my psychology degree. I love the opportunity to deepen knowledge of the interplay of Asian and Western cultures, particularly the meaning of the Chinese animals and wanted to use them in my paintings to convey a positive message to the viewer. I decided that I would need to learn how to do watercolour so I found the best artist mentor and studied with them. After I have completed a watercolour animal or nature feature I then cut out the watercolour feature and use it for collage. The animals I select often have meaning in Chinese

I create contemporary semi-abstracts. My style is quite unique as it combines two artistic styles. I have blended contemporary abstract oil painting with traditional realism watercolour. I delight in combining these genres as I love the softness of the watercolour in contrast to the vibrancy of the oil paint. I also enjoy the contrast of the Realism and Abstract movements. In this body of work I hope to encourage a connection to the environment. In their non-disturbed state grassy plains are magnificent, and vibrant parts of biological tapestry. Once covering vast tracts of the continent’s plains. The grassland are now among the most vulnerable and endangered habitats due to urbanization. I express the rugged beauty by focusing on the birds and animals that live in this environment.
