About The Artwork

This 24 by 36 sized oil on canvas is a mystical painting signifying women empowerment. “Sati” was a cruel practice that was common in India long ago which was later successfully abolished by Raja Ram Mohan Roy, with the help of many other brave members of society. Through this painting I intend to shed light on the subject that “Sati”, I believe, is still practiced in societies around the world, though not always causing physical harm but by inflicting mental harm. The left side of the painting depicts the predicament of women in society where they are tortured by a few handful of delinquents through corrosive thoughts or remarks. On the top and bottom of the painting we can see wolves representing the malicious members of society who try to tarnish and demean women with all their might. On the other hand the right side we see fire, representing the strength and courage latent in every women. It symbolizes retaliation against such an enemy by mustering all the strength from within. Now illuminating the mythological aspect of this painting by alluding to the goddesses Kali and Durga, inside the lady on the right hand side, who are worshiped for their power and victory over evil. Lastly I conclude by quoting the great prophet Sri Ram Krishna of West Bengal, Kolkata, India an ardent worshiper of Goddess Kali, who once said that “If you can’t bite back at least you should hiss back.” This thought is embodied in an abstract picture of a wolf as a symbol of retaliation.

Hello, I am Soham Biswas ,born in 1997 . I come from a Bengali family in Kolkata which had always served as a root to my passion for art. From my childhood, I have been inspired by the paintings of Raja Ravi Varma which drove me to pursue my journey in this field . My main focus and area of interests when it comes to painting is Hindu mythology and how it is being linked with our present life and society . Painting and drawing became a part of my life ever since I was a little boy and it only propelled to new heights after I started studying fine arts at Birla academy of art and culture. Through rigorous practice, I mastered the techniques of traditional art but it was contemporary art which gave me a voice of my own. Ever since that happened, I have started to see my life in a different perspective .Through contemporary art, I am able to express myself in ways I couldn’t have imagined before. I adopted contemporary art into my practices and slowly developed a style of my own.
