I lived with my family for 6 years from 2009 - 2015 on our boat at sea. During this time we sailed 35,000 nm (approx. 55,000 km) from Europe to Australia. While sailing high seas one experiences the effects of the climate crisis and the overfishing of the seas at first hand. We had a decisive experience on our Pacific crossing: In the middle of the night we were able to observe a fishing fleet consisting of three ships on the radar, which dragged a 50 km!! (30 miles) long net with them. At least we had to start the engines to escape this gigantic net. Until today I‘m still appalled by the incredible size of the net. Fishing is the greatest threat to marine wildlife. 70% percent of macro plastic at sea comes from fishing gear. Bottom trawling releases as much carbon as air travel. Fishing kills 30.000 sharks every hour. 24.000 fisheries workers die on the job per year.
