This work is a study piece inspired by a statue by Antonio Corradini. I wanted to capture the texture and look of the sculpted fabric as well as the unique perspective and composition of the photo taken that I worked from and referenced throughout the study process. I have always been amazed by the skill and talent sculptures have to capture the translucence and texture of fabric. It is incredible and I was curious to try via painting for myself. The woman appears either in pain or in ecstasy according to her face but you can't quite tell due to the unique angle and I love the obscurity and storytelling curiosity of this as I do in most of my work, as it leaves it to the viewers to interpret. The perspective of the painting allows one to appreciate the beauty, sexuality and femininity of the woman's body. Her robe is sheer and draped loosely against her form, allowing me to experiment with illusion and creating texture. I paint in grayscale to reference my graphite, charcoal and drawing roots. I also feel it unites us as one universal human race and allows the focus to be on emotion and storytelling from a face as well as allows me to keep my work cohesive and recognizable as mine.
