About The Artwork

Seed to Melon is piece with several layers. I wrote a longer poem, and there was a particular grouping of lines that inspired this piece. They went: When tracing the life’s walk, One sees that feet have drawn swirling lines on grass, on concrete, on wooden planks. Where have you walked? …and how? Inspired by this thought of one's walk in life, both literal and metaphorical, I began to contemplate the shapes and materials involved. Organic loops and swirls came to mind, so I slathered thick molding paste to mimic my notion of life's walk. Then came spray paint, inks as well as collage. Oils were the final step to complete the piece. The title "Seed to Melon," at its core about the journey of a life from birth to one's final breath.

After earning a Bachelor of Individualized Studies in Art, Holistic Health, and Religious Studies at the University of Minnesota, Cohen studied traditional oil painting. and mixed media techniques at the Milan Art Institute. It was there that her style as an abstract expressionist emerged. Today Cohen’s work explores emotional nuance through the use of vibrant colors and textures. Her work is visceral, fast-paced, and intuitive, leveraging tools such as spray paint, collage, mirror, fabric, acrylic inks, and oil paint. She considers her creative process a storm of inspiration that might strike at any moment - moving quickly before passing upon completion of each piece. “My work is intuitive,” says Cohen “Painting for me is both a release of the old and a process of regeneration where I feel very connected and alive.” Based in the heart of Minneapolis, Cohen’s studio is five minutes from the Mississippi river, where she often sits and writes about themes for her upcoming pieces. The sun moving through the water - an element Cohen has incorporated in much of her work - is one of her top inspirations. Cohen is in the beginning stages of creating an art book of her work.
