About The Artwork

Part of my Mythos series. Mythologies and meta-narratives were the source of inspiration. This piece captures the sun's yearly ritual of serenading the plants and the crops - creating many wonderful stories of resurrection. This piece is rich in material and texture. It is made with a cog, poppies, string, salt, dirt, and nails. A variety of processes and paint were used to create the piece.

Jason is an artist and art educator from the Pacific Northwest. His experience of growing up around the mountains and rivers of Southern Oregon helped to develop his instinct to wander, collect, and create. Jason worked at many jobs, such as a vineyard hand, forester, and carpenter before enrolling at Southern Oregon University. There, he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree specializing in painting and sculpture. Being heavily influenced by Joseph Beuys and the notion that art can have a transformative effect on the people who experience it, Jason decided to pursue his Masters in the Arts of Teaching from Pacific University in Oregon. His work today is reflective of all the skills and experiences he has accumulated. Paints, plaster, wax, rusted metal, dirt, roots, shells, and plants have a place in his work. In the spring of 2010 Jason was extremely successful with his exhibition, "Under the Wing of Corvus", where he explored the art, literature, and mythology of crows and ravens. He followed up his success with two more solo shows named "Mythos" and "Sojourn". He aims to layer his work with both material and meaning. In addition, Jason hopes that his work will encourage the viewer to contemplate our relationship with the intelligence of the Earth, animals, and stars. As he states in his statement for Sojourn: We are not outside nature. We are part of the great events which occur all around us; whether beneath our feet or in our night sky.
