Serving Suggestion Painting

Serving Suggestion...oil and acrylic on canvas. The graphic parts are acrylic and the meat is oil. The Serving Suggestion painting was created as part of a shop window installation in Hackney, London (see included images). The idea was to promote a new brand of tinned processed 100% mechanically recovered pork as "Love Meat"....as a comment on the industrialised meat industry. Real tins of meat were produced for the project alongside other promotional items. For a few weeks the installtion just resided there...then the negative reactions began. Emails begged me to remove the work from public view as it disturbed their children...I pointed out it was essentially no different to a fried chicken shop diplaying a smiley chicken graphic and 4 doors down from my venue was a real butcher's shop displaying bits of dead animals. Graffiti and animal rights stickers appeared. The artwork was now complete. I later opened the venue to the public to sell a few prints. There were a few aggresive confrontational incidents with vegan militants who could not understand that this is art and I am pretty much on their side. One admitted he was on the verge of throwing a brick through the window. WOW! The work was later shown at some other curated exhibitions and again it attracted other negative reaction...ludicrously from other artists who believed it shouldn't have been included in the show because it wasn't art but a mere photoshopped print.
