About The Artwork

The artwork is inspired by Mark Rothko. I live in the city where he was born and I have regular exhibitions at Rothko Museum in Daugavpils, Latvia. I practice Buddhism and meditation for 15 years, which is the reason why shades of burgundy-dark red have special meaning for me, as it is the color of the traditional robes of lamas and monks. This artwork represents the calmness of the outside with internal shining. The first large-size painting I created, was made directly on the wall of my room. Now that I tested many materials as canvas, I choose to use thick linoleum-like heavy material. It is best for avoiding creases and safer for sending via post services. It also makes it possible to hang it on the wall without additional framing or attach it directly to the wall.

Marta Biz is an artist and a photographer. She owns a private photography school and is a lecturer at university and art school. She lives in Daugavpils, Latvia. Mark Rothko was born here. Interest in his works and abstract art in general comes naturally. Her sister is diagnosed with multiple personality disorder, with more than 50 main personalities, who have become part of the family. While many philosophers and belief systems discuss the definition of “person” and “self”, she was exposed to daily manifestations of the absence of a fixed and permanent state of mind, that usually is assigned to one personality. This also alters the perception of the surrounding world and phenomena, where everything is composite and changes all the time, yet leaving an urge to search for the ability to “read between the lines” to see the true essence of space of mind. Abstract art is just a natural reflection of this perception. When attention is directed outside, then objects form the idea of a “solid world”. The inner world on a deeper level is ready to absorb outer forms, so it is formless itself and therefore universal and endless. Marta Biz is practicing Tibetan Buddhism and meditation techniques for over 20 years. Attending and organizing lectures and courses with high lamas.
