Medium: oil paint (Rembrandt) About Shangri-la: In this series of landscapes in which the Italian pine tree is the central theme, I take the viewer to a colorful place of peace and space. It is where the soul can calm down and the eye can wander with pleasure. It is as if the trees write signs with their trunks, branches and crowns. Twig signs that grasp the light and capture the colors in an infinite sky. They are not traditional landscapes that I paint, but modern interpretations of how I have often experienced the landscape in Italy. After an extensive traditional Italian picnic in the shade of the pine trees, it is wonderful to rest, staring into the horizon. In a lazy feeling, the conscious overflows into your subconscious. You dream what life could be like. Van Gogh masterfully painted the landscape in which he captured a very personal and also romantic look. In our time, David Hockney explores the landscape as a theme to paint a personal space with his own fresh perspective. The theme landscape is an eternal theme because it is so human. Who doesn't like to walk outside in nature? The clarity of the Japanese prints that became popular in the time of Van Gogh also resound in my paintings. Especially after I had the opportunity to print woodcuts in a traditional way on a trip through Japan. Looking at the landscape in this way is seeing with a realistic view, but sharper, more intense and more personal. And then you start painting but away from your gaze. I like color, looking, entertaining the eye but with a sharp mind and new ideas. With the ‘Italian Trees’ paintings I invite the viewer to find peace and space within themselves. Enjoy it! Sylvia Thijssen, artist In deze serie landschappen waarin de Italiaanse pijnboom centraal staat neem ik de kijker mee naar een kleurrijke plaats van rust en ruimte. Daar wordt de ziel gekalmeerd en het oog kan er vol plezier dwalen. Het is alsof de bomen met hun stammen, takken en kruinen tekens schrijven. Takken-tekens die in een oneindige lucht het licht beetpakken en de kleuren vangen. Het zijn geen traditionele landschappen die ik schilder, maar moderne interpretaties van hoe ik het landschap in Italië vaak heb ervaren. Na een uitgebreide traditionele Italiaanse picknick in de schaduw van de pijnbomen is het heerlijk rusten, dromerig in de einder starend. In een loom gevoel vloeit het bewuste over in je onderbewuste. Je droomt hoe het leven zou kunnen zijn. Van Gogh schilderde op meesterlijke wijze het landschap waarin hij een zeer persoonlijke en ook romantische blik vastlegde. In onze tijd onderzoekt David Hockney het landschap als thema om met een eigen frisse blik een persoonlijke ruimte in verf neer te zetten. Het thema landschap is een eeuwig thema omdat het zo menselijk is. Wie loopt er niet graag buiten in de natuur? Ook de helderheid van de Japanse prenten die populair werden in de tijd van Van Gogh klinken in mijn schilderijen door. Vooral nadat ik zelf op een reis door Japan in de gelegenheid was om houtsnedes op een traditionele manier af te drukken. Op deze manier naar het landschap kijken is zien met een realistische blik maar scherper, intenser en persoonlijker. En dan ga je schilderen maar weg van je blik. Ik hou van kleur, van kijken, van het oog vermaken maar met een scherpe geest en nieuwe ideeën. Ik nodig met de Italiaanse Bomen schilderijen de kijker uit rust en ruimte in zichzelf te vinden.
