About The Artwork

From the stroke of my paddle the canoe glides slowly forward along the waters of a pristine northern lake. Thus far the landscape remains undisturbed by human touch or interference. The small bay is a wetland alive with living creatures. The rich greens of the forest creep up to, and at times blanket the water’s edge. A reflection is revealed along the shoreline, an upside-down world tucked away from prying eyes. These places – away from urbanity – away from screens, are moment of sanctuary. Capturing the essence of this place on canvas is emotional and sensory fulfilling. The brush strokes I apply create an upward movement- the gestural tree shapes describe a living forest and water ecosystem of life. Warm tones of greens, and yellows reflect the warmth and stillness of the day. A single fallen pine with her branches sunk deeply along the water’s edge connects land, water and sky. This place, this small northern lake must remain a sacred space to those who visit it, and live within it. The painting is done with a reverential feel for what nature bestows upon to compel the viewer to take pause and reflect our place within nature.

Kaija Savinainen is a professional artist whose studio is near Canada’s capital, Ottawa. She earned her Fine Art degree from the University of Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada, taught by an inspiring group of professors originally from the US, and UK who built that exemplary program. There, she excelled at painting, printmaking and drawing and received several studio awards and a faculty commission. She graduated with Great Distinction and was awarded the President’s Gold Medal. Her Nordic ancestral roots have given her a strong affinity for the environment. Her paintings offer insights into nature’s vulnerability but also, it’s aesthetic beauty. As she states, “Through my art I stimulate the viewer’s sense of where we are going with what nature has bestowed upon us. Nature needs our respect, and care more than ever these days”. Savinainen belongs to The Ten Collective, a group of artists who exhibit annually to rave review in the Ottawa area and online. Her works have been purchased by several universities, and the Alberta Art Foundation, and are in private collections in USA, Canada, Japan, and Europe.
