The context for my current work is found in different painterly traditions, from landscape painting, such as Turner, to abstract expressionism, such as Rothko and Barnett Newman. I am interested in the notions and the conceptual meaning of the sublime, and how that can be appropriated and understood in the context of current culture, which is driven by a digital and virtual era.

These are executed in acrylic paint, that allows for quick rendition, texture and imperfection. I use decorating brushes to create large marks and gestures that accentuate the paintings’ imperfection and texture. The movement of swiping the decorating brushes in a quick and forceful manner is a vital part of the process as it allows me to work quickly, simplifying and abstracting the original source of information. The end product battles between a sense of clarity and incompleteness.

The precise lines interrupting the vastness are symbolic self-representations, inspired by electricity wires. They reference an interruption in communication between myself, and the difficulty I experience evoking understanding in others.

This series is large scale, as it evokes an overwhelming feeling to the viewers. The subject matter of the sublime is something untouchable and incomprehensible, so re creating this as a painting is what I strive for.

This painting is stretched and has D-rings and wire attached to the back for hanging options.

Charlotte Aiken is a UK based artist, currently working in Gloucestershire, creating visual impressions of the sky through the use of oil paint and mixed media. Her practice celebrates the sublimity of the sky and explores her own fascination with cloud formations and our connection to the natural world. Charlotte graduated from the London Metropolitan School of Art, Architecture and Design, in 2017. Shortly after graduating Charlotte won the Graduate Art Prize, with ARTIQ, London. Charlotte has exhibited across London and parts of the UK, she is represented by The Belgravia Gallery, ARTIQ, Cotswold Contemporary and Ad Lib Gallery. In 2023 her painting was exhibited in ‘Only Connect’, The Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition. Charlotte’s work centres on the notion of infinity, as exemplified by her representations of the sky. The composition of her paintings is guided by the structure of the cloud formations she photographs. She chooses on occasion to use decorating brushes to accentuate imperfection and texture, recreating an impression of the sky rather than an accurate portrayal. Charlotte’s work reflects her distinct perspective, where she experiences a world that feels excessively exposed, pixelated, and vivid. She uses her paintings to comprehend what she observes; the layers of colour and brush strokes are physical manifestations of what the world looks like through her eyes.
