Skylands #4 Painting

Part of a series attempting to capture the spirit of the New Jersey Skylands, the home of the artist, through a tense dialog between paint, subject, and the artist's emotional disposition at the time of creation. At times emotion yields to paint, at times paint to subject, and so on. The most successful paintings happen when all three call a truce and walk away equal victors, or when they eviscerate one another beyond recognition. The artist finds nature a perfect subject and outlet for the cathartic energy of the act of abstract expressionism without abandoning representation. That is, in nature he seeks reality's visual and emotional abstractions. This composition is based on a study painted in the early morning near the artist's home.
