About The Artwork

Snacks on the go! 2013 Subheading: Som tam? Strawberries? Acrylic colour on handmade Thai mulberry paper (kada sa), deckled edge, 21.5 x 31 in., 55 x 80 cm. The two things that drew me to this scene are the body language of the lady on the right and the outpouring of food items which makes up the foreground of this scene. For those not too familiar with Thai foods…. In the foreground are laid out the ingredients for papaya salad (somtam) including crab, tomatoes, long beans, etc. Sharing the back half of the table is a woman selling strawberries. This is another moment captured at Jatujak weekend market in Bangkok. I have left this painting more bare than usual. There are plenty visible pencil lines that form part of the background crowd for that sketching feeling and contrasts nicely with the more embellished subject . There is plenty of bare paper as well, so one can see the parchment type paper, unbleached, textured. The paper I use is a traditional mulberry paper handmade in Thailand. It is a thick parchment paper, strong yet pliable. I have the paper made to this size to get the deckled edges which adds to the textural effect. The close up pictures are to get a better feel for the texture and brush strokes of the painting. Then there’s the work in progress, and me with the painting for perspective.

I'm Canadian born now residing in Malaysia. I've been working professionally as an artist since 1980 ish… time flies. I have exhibited my paintings in Vancouver and coastal B.C., Bangkok, Singapore & Malaysia, areas I’ve lived in over time. Now I do it all online. I’ve traveled extensively over the years and you’ll see that people, places and cultures are a recurring theme in my art. I attach importance to papers I use for my paintings. Some are done on acid free watercolour papers, from 180lb weight to 300lb. I also use handmade parchment type papers. These are thick yet pliable, strong, with deckled edge that add to the look of my paintings. I’m still a passionate guy. I’m passionate about life and people, passionate about art and painting. And I feel really at my best when I’m putting all these things down on paper. I only wish I had more time to delve into all these activities of mine. But I work with what I have. My health sucks so I’m slowing down. And there's more: book illustration, portrait, comic strip, caricature. I also work with camera and computer, to create the images brush strokes just can't deliver. So follow my brush work and hopefully you’ll find that special painting meant just for you.
