About The Artwork

This 49-panel painting follows the route of the DART train in Dublin and Wicklow. The DART route runs from Greystones in Co Wicklow to the picturesque suburb of Howth in north Dublin. This Snapshots painting includes iconic buildings such as the Martello tower, the lighthouse in Howth, Blackrock College and Pease Street train station. The “Snapshots” series seeks to elevate the everyday, shining a spotlight on the often overlooked beauty of our urban surroundings. How often do you truly look around you or really notice the detail of a building or streetlamp? Capturing the essence of an area is central to my work. My Snapshots pieces are vibrant yet minimalistic compilation paintings. These paintings use various panels to reflect different aspects and views of the built environment of a particular area. Using social media as well as traditional sketchbook methods allows me to incorporate the feeling for and views of an area, creating a work which is enduring as well as being immediate and current. I paint using clean lines and strong colours. These bold blocks of colour suit the subject of largely urban environments, taking ‘snapshots’ of views which are the familiar evocative pieces that make up the jigsaw of the world we inhabit.

I paint from my studio in Celbridge, Co. Kildare using bold blocks of vibrant colour and thick black lines to help accentuate shape and form. Having recently launched the ‘Snapshot’ series with ‘Snapshots of Dublin’ (launched at Art Source RDS 2019), I spend much of my time photographing and sketching the known and lesser-known sights of the city in order to capture new panels for the ‘snapshot’ series. The Snapshots series attempts to look at our built environment through a new lens and depict the familiar places around us in the way we actually view these places from day-to-day. This can almost be described as an instagram-style approach to viewing the city where we capture the world around us through a series of ‘snapshots’. To achieve the poster-style effect of these paintings I use highly pigmented fluid acrylic paint and strong lines and colours. This series lends itself well to commissions whereby clients choose various sights around their city or local environment which are significant to them. This can often result in a final piece which incorporates ‘snapshots’ from different cities and even countries.
