About The Artwork

"Christiaan Sijtsma’s still lifes exude an overall traditional ambiance, yet maintain a distinct character of their own. He always starts from his own observation. He paints objects as he actually sees them, not from a photograph. This approach gives his paintings a convincing sense of depth. The scene portrays a workbench with various objects placed on top of it. With great attention to composition, colour and light Christiaan Sijtsma has crafted an atmosphere where the arrangement of these objects appears coincidental, making the whole feel convincing and approachable. This effect is emphasized in a surprising and humorous way by the presence of a sparrow that has flown into the scene, enticed by the spilled birdseeds. The sparrow gazes to its side, drawing the attention of the viewer." The inspiration behind this work stems from my numerous observations of birds feeding on birdseed in the garden of my parental home. I was struck by the beautiful blue colour of the birdseed bag. This sparked the idea of centering a still life around it with mainly older and weathered objects, creating a remarkable contrast between new and old. Thus, “Sparrow discovers still life”, came to fruition. Executed in oil paint on ‘Lionboard Oil Tempered’ (commonly know as Masonite), the work is finished with two coats of gloss varnish. It is presented in a black wooden frame, crafted by a local carpenter, with a finish of satin varnish. I find this type of wide and deep black frame to be the most effective at enclosing the work and creating even more of a sense of depth. The dimensions of the work itself are 70 x 100 x 0,6 centimeter, while including the frame, it measures approximately 82 x 112 x 5 centimeters. The framed work will be carefully packed with acid-free paper, poly wrap, bubble wrap and corner protectors for added protection. The wrapped work will then be placed in a sturdy crate made of plywood, lined with polystyrene.

Christiaan Sijtsma was born in Heerenveen, the Netherlands, in 1995. After completing high school, he pursued a degree in Dutch law at the University of Groningen, specializing in private law. He graduated in 2021. From a young age, he was interested in design and color. During his study of law in early 2017, he developed an interest in painting. This quickly grew into a true passion, and he focused on painting with oil paint. Christiaan Sijtsma is self-taught, having built up his technical knowledge and skills on his own. Christiaan Sijtsma primarily paints still lifes. He always starts from his own observation. He paints objects as he actually sees them, not from a photograph. This approach gives his paintings a convincing sense of depth. His sense of atmosphere is expressed in his color palette, the objects, and the carefully constructed compositions. The still lifes exude a traditional atmosphere, but they maintain a distinct character of their own. In addition to painting still lifes, Christiaan Sijtsma also paints marine/maritime subjects. His paintings depict the forces of nature - the wild water, the wind - and the ships that defy these forces.
