About The Artwork
The variety and beauty of birds are very compelling. Owls in particular seem understand your thoughts and want to see inside the viewer as the viewer sees them. I don't paint with a great deal of texture, so the painting surface is relatively flat. The spots called out for the lushness of oil; the piece is painted on a flat masonite panel, a frequent substrate choice for me. My style has evolved from a tight, illustrative one into a looser, more expressive one, which has been very satisfying and creative.

I spent forty years as a medical illustrator, retiring five years ago. I had never done fine art at all, and it has been a revelation. For the first couple of years, everything I did looked like a medical illustration (i.e. a medical illustration of a flower or a medical illustration of a tree) but just in the past few months I've been able to stretch and start to become a painter. It's been wonderful!
