Still life with gourds and glass Painting

“Christiaan Sijtsma’s still lifes exude an overall traditional ambiance, yet maintain a distinct character of their own. He always starts from his own observation. He paints objects as he actually sees them, not from a photograph. This approach gives his paintings a convincing sense of depth. In this still life, Christiaan Sijtsma presents a composition consisting of gourds, a glass apothecary bottle and a knife. The gourds are displayed in a way to be admired for their colourful nature. The gourds reflecting in the glass bottle make the painting feel even more real. Looking at all objects and elements in this work, there is a clear cohesion visible. One example of this is the knife portruding over the edge of the blue surface, creating an overlap and thus integrating the foreground.” Executed in oil paint on ‘Lionboard Oil Tempered’ (commonly known as Masonite), I finished this work with two coats of gloss varnish. It is presented in a black wooden frame, crafted by a local carpenter, with a finish of satin varnish. I find this type of wide and deep black frame to be the most effective at enclosing the work and creating even more of a sense of depth. The dimensions of the work itself are 61,5 x 77 x 0,6 centimeter, while including the frame, it measures approximately 74 x 89,5 x 5,5 centimeters. The framed work will be carefully packed with acid-free paper, poly wrap, bubble wrap and corner protectors for added protection. The wrapped work will then be placed in a sturdy crate made of plywood, lined with polystyrene.
