About The Artwork

These street artists are often found in the third world. They use simple equipment in the form of drums, trumpets and other simple musical instruments such as gongs. In the 60s to early 70s, there were many groups of street artists. They walked around from village to village hoping for money from local residents. Currently this kind of art can only be found at certain events such as weddings or local cultural events. The colorful costumes and performance styles of these street artists caught my attention. Instead of capturing it with a photo camera, I thought it would be better to immortalize it on canvas. That way I can adjust the aesthetic aspect according to my imagination. . This folk art, full of simplicity, which comes from a marginalized community group that is almost extinct, has almost lost respect from a society that has moved towards cultural modernization. I hope that through the painting which I entitled Street Dancers, the culture of the lower class people will get the respect it deserves. Oil paint on canvas is the right choice to depict these increasingly rare moments. The unrestricted, straightforward expressionist style has always been the choice to avoid the boring "pretty painting" rules that apply in realism.

I was born in the city of Malang, a highland city in East Java Province and now live in Jakarta. I am a self-taught artist, having had no formal training. My hobby for painting started to grow when I was 4 years old when I could already hold a pencil. The walls inside the house are silent witnesses to wild drawing activities expressing the images in my mind, whatever they are. This madness has allowed me to pursue painting from a unique perspective, unencumbered by ideas or techniques formed in the surrounding environment. I have honed my skills and developed my painting style over the years based on my observations of other people's paintings. Visiting many painting exhibitions over the years taught me to develop an interest in painting in various styles. This is based on the fact that painting enthusiasts in Indonesia are very diverse. However, there are still very few fans of modern painting. Realist and naturalist style paintings are more popular with the public. However, the many exhibitions in representative buildings where modern style paintings were displayed ultimately attracted my interest more. Paintings that express freedom and a mindset that is not bound by applicable dogma and rules.
