Private Collection We often use a lighted candle as a nonviolent way to strike out against injustice or in memory of victims and those who died. Extinguishing candlelight can symbolize the sacrifice of one's life. I painted the candlelight series mainly using Middle East revolution articles. The flickering flame is a powerful symbol of hope and endurance in the face of darkness. It can reflect the influence of the Arab Spring and the need to preserve the memories and ideals that fuel change. We should keep lights on because life's memories fade just like the light of a candle that burns down.

In 2003, while traveling with a Xavier Gonzalez & Edwards grant from the Art Students League of NY, I joined the Cercle Artistic de Sant Lluc in Barcelona, Spain. My art has been shown at selected and invited exhibitions, mostly in public spaces, in over 120 groups, eight solo, and 2 two-person exhibitions throughout the U.S., Italy, Spain, Japan, and South Korea. My work has been featured in over 50 critical articles globally, including "100 Greatest Women Artists of All Time... So Far" by Arthur Smith in 2020 and interviewed by m-u-s-e-u-m.org/shinyoung-an. I was invited to be the figurative artist of New Jersey by "Figure 50" in 2013.
