ABOUT THE ARTWORK

A visualization of the layers of healing one might build up through one's life. Does healing trauma mean it disappears or does the healing itself builds up a new layer on top of something that will forever exist? Are we building barriers and is the wound healing behind the barrier? Do we lose or do we gain something with each layer? Some layers need to be big and thick, some are translucent, and some refer back to childhood. This is part of an ongoing exploration of layers and sedimentation. Believe it or not this one came to me in a dream :) This medium-sized work is painted in slow-drying oil over a natural size and ground recipe dating to the Flemish painters. The canvas is mounted directly on wood for unrivaled durability. Raw canvas is left visible on the edges of the painting. The painting is finished with a high-quality gloss varnish that brings out the colors and texture of the paint and ground.

Antoine Quairiat is a Belgian painter currently residing in Buenos Aires. He creates mainly realist figurative works involving a play with the idea of representation, often by subverting the subject or adding a narrative layer in the composition. All his works are painted directly from life and are therefore usually simple calm compositions. They draw the viewer in, inviting serene projection into the paint layer They present a concrete subject but always leave a void to be filled by the viewer. All paintings on canvas or linen use a traditional Flemish Painter's recipe for preparing the support and are mounted on braced panels. This ensures great stability and longevity to the works.
