About The Artwork

This painting is an acrylic work on canvas, and part of a series inspired by summer views and landscapes of the Northeast. This painting starts out with moving blocks of color around, combined with palette knife creating lines with automatism. I look from my studio out onto fields and the Connecticut River, and use that visual to build layers of color, and pull linear organic elements based on what I see in the landscape.

Art is a continuous process of evolution, exploring the subconscious, making connections, while including memories and experiences. I lean on chance and intuition to inform the direction I take the pliable materials manipulated into new optics. I look for a visual metaphor or abstraction that resolves or comes into focus, as the work becomes its own entity. The artwork becomes an experience unto itself that blends with our current reality, often offering a new viewpoint. I studied Art & Design at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, where I was fortunate to have many influential professors during my time there. John Pai, was a key influence on my interest in the three-dimensions, and use of linear elements in space. I was a painting student with Mary Buckley Parriott, who studied with Hans Hoffman, and the Yale influence of Josef Albers. I had the privilege of working for her in the studio she had in Huntington Bay, New York. Keeping with the theme of early Bauhaus, Bruce Hannah and William Katavolos were strong supporters of blending the fields of art & design for me. In 1998 I was appointed to the faculty at Pratt Institute, School of Art & Design, and have since balanced being an educator, designer and an artist. In 2010, I moved from New York to live in Hanover, New Hampshire, to lead the design efforts at Simon Pearce. I now have a great deal more space to be creative. Many of my creations are in private collections, and I show new artwork regularly in New England and Brooklyn, NY.
