Surface Painting

This work is driven by concepts and processes behind reworking and scraping off previous layers to reveal hidden marks previously unseen when the layer was originally painted. The very first layer was somewhat of a miss, however after constant rework the surface began to emerge from the scraped clumps of half dried oil paint. I always keep the start of my palette basic in order to find order and naturally develop the palette on the piece itself. Through this piece, I learnt what I like about painting with oil. The reworking came through studying Frank Auerbach in his relentless quest for perfection and scraping off paint day after day. My methods and compositions come from Gerhard Richter and his abstractions. This was the first true painting, I felt I had earned the right to finish. It took weeks of persistence to get right.
