System #1 - SOLD Painting

This is the very first in the "System" series of works. The work was originally conceived as a process exploration, to explore the process of creating a thick base layer of medium body white paint into which a cross-hatch of grooves could be etched using a toothed silicone implement, thereby creating a highly textured surface profile over which multiple glazes could then be applied in order to visually reveal the complexity of the texture by having the pigment from the glazes settle into and rest in the grooves and against the edges of the ridges of the etched markings. As the work progressed, a composition revealed itself, suggestive of a circuit or complex matrix or channels along which information or data may flow, with this matrix seemingly extending infinitely into the distance. Through the process of creating multiple layers of glazes and overlaying numerous small embellishments and highlights, the impression of visual depth was created, with the aim that the viewer could become lost in the system and find themselves extrapolating parts or details that are merely suggested or hinted at by the impressionistic representation but that may not be literally present in the work.
