Take Me Out of the Blue, Dear Painting

My sub-series Take Me Out Of The Blue emerged from a set of letters written by my grandfather (whom I never met) to my grandmother while he was a young man serving in the US Army during World War I. War is misery shattered into a million pieces spread in a million directions. At the center of it all is the human being, striving to survive against both the bombarding threats and the harrowing sense of isolation war inevitably enforces. Still, there exists one abiding antidote to war’s cruelties--real human connection. It is these truths that radiate out from my grandfather’s letters and words, including when he wrote this to his beloved “Goldie”: I need to hear from you to take me out of the blue. Feeling isolated and yearning to reconnect are hardly unique to war—they can occur during a global pandemic or simply everyday life. In the Take Me Out of the Blue series, I try to reflect both the joyous dream of reconnecting as well as the “Blue”-- the longing and gloom that befalls all of us now and then. As it turns out, I created many of these pieces just prior to the war in Ukraine, where my grandmother’s family fled to escape the pogroms of the late 1800’s.
