About The Artwork

Russian folktale Baba Yaga Once upon a time there was a husband and wife, and they had a daughter. His wife fell ill and died. The man was burning, he was burning, and he married another. The angry woman disliked the girl, beat her, scolded her, and only thought how to completely destroy, destroy. Just once father left somewhere, and the stepmother says to the girl: - Go to my sister, your aunt, ask her for a needle and a thread - you need to sew a shirt. And this aunt was a baba-yaga, a bone leg. The girl did not dare to refuse, she went, and before that she went to her native aunt. - Hello, aunt! - Hello, dear! Why did you come? - My stepmother sent me to her sister to ask for a needle and thread - he wants to sew my shirt. “Well, niece, that you came to see me before,” the aunt says. - Here you have a ribbon, butter, a loaf of bread and a piece of meat. There will be a birch in your eyes to quit - you bandage it with a ribbon; the gates will creak and clap, hold you - you add oil to them under the heels; dogs will tear you up - you throw them a loaf of bread; the cat will tear your eyes - give him the meat. The girl thanked her aunt and went. She walked, walked and came into the forest. A hut stands on chicken legs, on ram's horns, standing in a forest behind a tall tyn, and a baba-yaga sits in a hut, a bone leg weaves a canvas. - Hello, aunt! - says the girl. - Hello, niece! - says Baba Yaga. - What do you need? - My stepmother sent me to ask you for a needle and a thread - to sew my shirt. - Well, niece, I will give you a needle and a thread, and you sit down while you work! Here the girl sat at the window and began to weave. And Baba Yaga came out of the hut and said to her employee: “I’ll lie down to sleep now, and you go, drown the bathhouse and wash your niece.” Yes, look, wash it thoroughly: I wake up - eat it! The girl heard these words - she is neither alive nor dead. As Baba Yaga left, she began to ask the worker: - My darling! You do not set fire to wood so much as pour water into the stove, but carry water with a sieve! - And she gave her a handkerchief. A female worker drowns a bath, and Baba Yaga woke up, went to the window and asked: - Do you weave, niece, do you weave, dear? - Tku, aunty, tku, honey! Baba Yaga went to bed again, and the girl gave the cat meat and asked: “Brother cat, teach me how to escape from here.” The cat says: - There’s a towel and a scallop on the table, take them and run as soon as possible: otherwise Baba Yaga will eat it! Baba Yaga will chase after you - put your ear to the ground. When you hear that she is close, drop the scallop - a dense dense forest will grow. While she is going through the forest, you will run far. And again you hear the chase - throw a towel: a wide and deep river will spill. - Thank you, cat-brother! - says the girl. She thanked the cat, took a towel and a comb and ran. Dogs rushed at her, they wanted to tear her, bite her - she gave them bread. The dogs let her in. The gates creaked, they wanted to slam shut - and the girl poured oil under their heels. They missed her. The birch made a noise, wanted to quit her eyes, - the girl tied her with a ribbon. Birch and missed it. The girl ran out and ran that there was urine. Runs and does not look back. And the cat, meanwhile, sat by the window and began to weave. Not so much weaves as confused! Baba Yaga woke up and asked: - Do you weave, niece, do you weave, dear? And the cat answered her: - Tku, aunt, tku, dear! Baba Yaga rushed into the hut and sees - there are no girls, and the cat is sitting, weaving. Baba Yaga began to beat and scold the cat: - Oh you old rogue! Oh you villain! Why let the girl out? Why didn’t she tear her eyes? Why didn't you scratch your face? .. And the cat answered her: “I have been serving you for so many years, you haven’t thrown a gnawed bone at me, but she gave me the meat!” Baba Yaga ran out of the hut, attacked the dogs: - Why didn’t they tear the girl, why didn’t they bite? .. Dogs tell her: - We have been serving you for so many years, you didn’t throw us a burnt crust, but she gave us a loaf of bread! Baba Yaga ran to the gate: “Why didn't you creak, why didn't you clap?” Why did they let the girl out of the yard? .. The gate says: - We have been serving you for so many years, you didn’t add water to us and heels, but she didn’t spare us the butter! Baba Yaga jumped to the birch: - Why didn’t the girl open her eyes? Birch answers her: - I have been serving you for so many years, you did not bandage me with a thread, and she gave me a ribbon! Baba Yaga began to scold the worker: “Why, so-and-so, didn’t wake me, didn’t call me?” Why did she let out? .. The worker says: - I have been serving you for so many years - I never heard a good word from you, but she gave me a handkerchief, she spoke well and kindly to me! Baba Yaga shouted, made a noise, then got into a stupa and rushed off in pursuit. Pestle drives, broom marks the track ... But the girl ran and ran, stopped, put her ear to the ground and hears: the earth is trembling, shaking - the Baba Yaga is chasing, and it’s really close ... The girl took out a comb and threw it over her right shoulder. A forest has grown here, dense and high: the roots of the trees go down three trees to the ground, the peaks of the cloud are supported. Baba Yaga rushed along, began to bite and break the forest. She nibbles and breaks, and the girl runs further. How much, how much time has passed, the girl put her ear to the ground and hears: the earth is trembling, shaking - the Baba Yaga is chasing, it’s really close. The girl took a towel and threw it over her right shoulder. At that moment the river spilled - wide-wide, deep-deep! Baba Yaga jumped to the river, gritted her teeth with anger - she could not cross the river. She returned home, gathered her bulls and drove to the river: - Drink my bulls! Drink the whole river to the bottom! The bulls began to drink, but the water in the river does not decrease. The Baba Yaga got angry, lay down on the shore, began to drink water herself. Saw, saw, saw, saw, drank until it burst. And the girl meanwhile runs and runs. In the evening, the father returned home and asked his wife: - And where is my daughter? Baba says: - She went to her aunt - to ask for a needle and a thread, but something was delayed. The father was worried, he wanted to go and look for his daughter, and the daughter came running home, out of breath, could not catch her breath. - Where have you been, daughter? - asks the father. - Ah, father! - the girl answers. - My stepmother sent me to her sister, and her sister was a baba-yaga, a bone leg. She wanted to eat me. I ran away from her by force! As his father knew all this, he became angry with the evil woman and drove her out of the house with a dirty broom. And he began to live together with his daughter, in peace and well. Here and the tale is over.
