About The Artwork

Brompton Cemetery is located near Earl's Court in South West London, England (postal districts SW 5 and 10), in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. It is managed by The Royal Parks and is one of the Magnificent Seven. Established by Act of Parliament, it opened in 1840 and was originally known as the West of London and Westminster Cemetery. All of the Brompton Cemetery paintings were initially drawn on site, usually in one to two hours.

James Cooper is a London based artist born in 1971. He completed a pre-degree in Fine Art at the Kensington and Chelsea College, and a BA (Hons) in Fine Art painting at Hornsey College of Art. After five years of service he left the armed forces, and was the co-owner of the highly acclaimed Windmill restaurant in Fulham. It was here where he had his first studio, and used the venue as a platform to launch his own paintings, as well as curate group and solo exhibitions for other artists. Over the last twenty years James Cooper’s painting processes have continued to evolve and mature. His sources of inspiration remain both diverse and eclectic. The latest collection of work provides an exciting opportunity to explore this development through images of urban scenes. He uses traditional oil painting techniques in a modern style that allows him to express his distinctive perspective on contemporary life in an exciting and unusual manner. Work is commissioned in addition to being held in institutional, private, and corporate collections both in the UK and worldwide, and has been displayed in numerous exhibitions. Cooper has subsequently lived and painted in New York, Cuba, Ireland, and India in addition to various other countries.
