About The Artwork

Roots by Gela Mikava. Georgian traditional clothing is an apt reflection of the cultural heritage of Georgia’s native peoples. Within the conventional attire of its national clothing, the Georgian people’s adaptability, devotion to tradition and appreciation of aesthetic beauty is conveyed. Traditional lifestyles developed around the local climate and terrain, which in turn precipitated the creation of conventional clothing. Although every region of Georgia possessed its own distinct attire, an overarching similarity was seen in the chokha (Russian: cherkeska), a wool coat typically worn by men and noted for the cartridge holders sewn onto the chest. Women’s clothing was much more varied between the regions, particularly in the remote mountain communities. Prince Vakhushti Batonishvili (1696–1757) paved the way in the study of traditional Georgian clothing, giving particular attention to the attire from medieval times and that of his own generation. Foreign travelers such as Arcangelo Lamberti and Jean Chardin also made notable contributions to the topic. The latter travelled to Georgia in the 1670s, and his remarkably detailed notes provide valuable insights into local clothing of that time as well as the similarities and differences between Persian, Georgian and European attire. Thanks to these and other such historical records, a picture of traditional Georgian clothing from each region of the country may be pieced together today.

I'm Gela Mikava, a self-taught artist based in Tbilisi, Georgia, born on November 16, 1995. My artistic journey began with a foundation in architecture, culminating in both bachelor's and master's degrees from the Technical University. This architectural background profoundly influences my artistic expression, guiding me toward a multidisciplinary approach that incorporates diverse materials and techniques. Throughout my career, I have exhibited my work in numerous personal and group exhibitions, including prestigious events such as the Affordable Art Fair and Battersea Art Fair in London. Notably, I was the youngest artist featured at the Hessinck Live Auction in the Netherlands, where my paintings were sold alongside renowned artists like Andy Warhol and Banksy. In my art practice, I employ a wide array of mixed media, experimenting with textures and materials such as textiles, soft materials, cellophane, oil, acrylic, pastel, and marker. This eclectic blend of mediums allows me to achieve a heightened level of expression and visual complexity. Thematically, my work delves into existential and political subjects, which I convey through vibrant and captivating colors. By juxtaposing profound ideas with aesthetic beauty, I aim to provoke contemplation and evoke introspection in the viewer. Each piece is intended to plant a seed of thought that grows into a deeper understanding over time. I believe in constant artistic evolution, aspiring towards the forefront of ultra-contemporary art. Through my creative endeavors, I seek to push boundaries and challenge perceptions, contributing to the ever-evolving landscape of global art. Thank you for considering my artistic journey and the concepts behind my work. I am committed to advancing the dialogue of contemporary art and look forward to sharing my vision with the world.
