"The ELEVEN" is a song by the Grateful Dead which refers to the odd number of beats they were exploring in the song. As it happened, I was developing a mandala and I made an error which resulted in eleven pattern pieces, rather than the predictable twelve, on a square format. Since the mistake was so even and perfect, I decided to follow it throughout the work, which is not a matter of measuring, but rather of instinctive balancing and invention. Ethel Mann

I have lived and worked on the Big Island of Hawai'i since 2009. The inspiration provided by that change of location, from the San Francisco Bay Area to Keaʻau, Hawaii, is clearly evident in the work. My Berkeley roots have continued to guide my practice, even as my work now springs from Hawaii.
